Chapter Ten
Kevin's eyes opened.
"Sorry," Jeremy whispered, "I was trying to be quiet."
Stirring under the sheets, Kevin yawned and rubbed his face. "You going?"
"Yeah. See ya tomorrow night sometime."
"Have fun, man. I'm so jealous I could shit!"
Smiling shyly, Jeremy replied, "Just stay out of trouble, will ya?"
"I could say the same."
"See ya."
"Bye."
Waving, Jeremy hoisted his backpack to his shoulder and then left the dorm room, closing the door tightly behind him. The halls were deserted and no one was around. The occupants didn't come to life until nearly noon on weekends. Hung over from too much booze and dope, most of the student population only seemed to rise at dusk, like a brood of vampires.
A light drizzle was falling. Jeremy lowered his head and started walking off the campus in the opposite direction of the town center. The day before he had checked out Nottingham Road and found the Exxon station with the bank on the opposite side. It was a ten minute walk, but he didn't mind. It cleared his brain of cobwebs after a fitful sleep. His mind working in spurts, he remembered listening to Kevin's side of the conversation, reaffirming his termination of his and Kelly's relationship. No amount of Crystal's interference could change it. Jeremy was very glad. Kelly was beginning to get on his nerves.
His hair was slowly saturating with the air's misty spray. Drops had formed and were dripping past his forehead and eyebrows to his jacket. Pausing, Jeremy looked up and saw the revolving Exxon sign. He crossed the street and had a premonition of being stood up. Of the troll putting the kybosh on the plan and Peter having no way to let him know.
Finally arriving at the station, Jeremy had no idea what Peter drove and looked around the area for him. Several people were gassing up and buying newspapers. As the rain increased, Jeremy stood under the canopy of the shop and watched the traffic ebb and flow. When he shook his head, water droplets spattered around him. He wiped his face with his sleeve, and then twisted to look into the window of the tiny store. Checking his pocket for change, he entered and removed a bottle of water from out of one of the refrigerator sections and went to the cashier to pay. Glimpsing out of the glass, he noticed a black four-by-four truck pull in and park away from the pumps. He thanked the clerk and took his change, then as he opened the plastic top he made his way across the parking lot to get a look inside the cab. Immediately, as Peter recognized him, the lights flipped on and off and the passenger door opened. Hurrying his pace, Jeremy looked in and found Peter's luscious grin. "Nice rig!"
"Thanks. Christ, you're soaked! Man, I'm sorry. I should have picked you up closer to your dorm room."
"I don't want to get your seats wet." Jeremy took off his jacket and threw it behind the seat with his pack.
"Don't worry.
